2005-2006 - "Hulse Hat-trick" home shirt - Hulse 10

Hulse Hat-trick home shirt - Hulse 10

The Shirt

This shirt was only worn during the 2005/2006 season as Leeds reached the Championship Play Off Final at Wales’ Millenium Stadium.

Manufactured by Admiral, the shirt features the Whyte & Mackay sponsor which had been used in the previous two seasons and Rhodar as the secondary sponsor on the back above the name and number, which was only printed on player shirts. There is a thin yellow and blue pin stripe effect on the main body of the shirt with a mesh type fabric around the bottom front and back.

The shirt is heavily stained from match use. The number has been positioned an inch or so too low on the back of the shirt, which has made it easier to identify the games it was used in. You can see a photo of the shirt in action in the gallery on the right. The last photo in the gallery, Hulse celebrating with Jonathan Douglas after scoring at Crystal Palace, shows the usual higher position of the number.

The Season

Leeds started their 2nd season in The Championship under the control of manager Kevin Blackwell. There was plenty of change in the squad with Leeds legend Lucas Radebe retiring, a young Aaron Lennon joining Tottenham Hotspur for a measly £1m and Clarke Carlisle, Matthew Spring, Simon Johnson, Julian Joachim, Martin Woods and Seth Johnson all departing. Coming the other way was striker Rob Hulse from West Brom, Preston left winger Eddie Lewis, Portsmouth midfielder Steve Stone, Brighton left-back Dan Harding, forward Robbie Blake and goalkeeper Ian Bennett from Birmingham and CS Maritimo's Angolan defender Rui Marques.

On the pitch Leeds had a good season and secured a place in the Play Offs by finishing in 5th place. Leeds played Billy Davies’ Preston North End over two legs in the Play Off Semi Final, drawing the first game 1-1 at Elland Road before winning the 2nd leg 2-0 at Deepdale with goals from Hulse and Richardson.

Leeds faced Watford in the Play Off Final at Wales’ Millenium Stadium while Wembley was being rebuilt. Leeds were poor from the start and the game finished 3-0 to Watford.

The Player

The shirt was worn by Leeds forward Rob Hulse. Hulse joined Leeds from West Bromwich Albion in May 2005 for £1.1m following a successful loan spell in the previous season.

Hulse was Leeds’ joint top scorer in the 2005/2006 season with 14 goals. Following Leeds’ dismal display in the Play Off Final, Hulse made his own move to the Premier League joining Sheffield United for £2.2m.

Hulse wore this shirt during the early stages of the season, including the game against Derby County on 28th September 2005 at Elland Road where he scored a blistering 12 minute hat-trick. You can see a photo of Hulse scoring his 3rd goal past Derby keeper Lee Camp in the gallery on the right hand side.
